ACLU Releases Report on DMC in Massachusetts Juvenile Justice System
Building Blocks for Youth Issues Press Release
On Monday, June 2, 2003, the American Civil Liberties Union released a new
report entitled Disproportionate Minority Confinement in Massachusetts:
Failures in Assessing and Addressing Overrepresentation of Minorities in the
Massachusetts Juvenile Justice System. The report is consistent with
national research showing overrepresentation and disparate treatment of
youth of color in juvenile justice systems across the country. The report
also clearly documents that state officials have chosen to ignore the issue
by blaming the overrepresentation on poverty and high crime rates in poor
neighborhoods, and have continually failed to take meaningful action to
address inequities in its juvenile justice system.
Building Blocks for Youth joined the ACLU and local advocates in
Massachusetts in calling on the state to take action in addressing racial
disparities in its juvenile justice system. BBY issued a press release
announcing the ACLU report.
