ACTION ALERT
Keep Kids Out of Maryland's Adult Jails

Too many youth are ending up in Maryland's adult prisons! The consequences for youth of color are devastating: Studies show that Baltimore's African-American youth are treated more harshly than white youth even when charged with similar offenses. More than 9 out of 10 youth charged as adults in Baltimore City are African-American, and they are almost twice as likely to go to prison as white youth. On March 6th, legislators will be considering "transfer" legislation (HB 520 Delegate Marriott) to keep kids out of Maryland's adult prisons and treat children as children. Your actions can help get this legislation passed!

Here's how you can help:

  1. Call House Judiciary Committee members and/or your legislator to urge passage of the "transfer" bill (HB 520).
  1. Send letters! Send letters to House Judiciary Committee members and/or your legislator to urge passage of the "transfer" bill (HB 520). A sample letter is attached.
  1. Attend the March 6th hearing at 1pm. The House Judiciary Committee will be holding a hearing in Annapolis at the State Capitol and you can show your support by attending and making your views heard!
  1. Take Action on March 10th! Come to the Legislative Education Day, sponsored by the Maryland Juvenile Justice Coalition's Community Action Members.
  1. Get others involved (host a letter-signing or phone-banking activity).
