Conditions of Confinement
Every year, hundreds of thousands of youth are placed in juvenile
detention and corrections facilities and on any given day, more than
8,000 youth are held in adult jails. The Office of Juvenile Justice and
Delinquency Prevention's national survey shows overcrowding in most of
the juvenile facilities, making these dangerous and unhealthy places for
youth. Youth in adult jails and prisons are in even more danger as they
are at serious risk of abuse, assault and suicide.
The "Fact Sheet" provides data on conditions of confinement for youth,
such as over crowding. The "Key Studies" highlights major studies that
document conditions of confinement for youth. The "Resources" list
provides contact information for obtaining data on conditions of
confinement and national organizations actively involved in advocacy
efforts to improve conditions of confinement for youth.
